Luka and Milko Pavičić

The Pavičić family has been winegrowers for generations, but it was not until 2019 the Pavičić brothers decided to launch their first commercial label. The boutique winery is based in the small village of Vrbanj and the vineyards are located just at the foot of the town in the UNESCO protected Stari Grad Plain.

The Pavičić brothers have been involved in viticulture and winemaking since they were young as it’s a centuries-old tradition in the family. The picturesque family house and adjacent konoba (wine-cellar) have recently been refurbished to serve as not only a cellar but also a tasting room. Milko and Luka produce the Pavičić wine labels in a partnership and focus on single varietal wines from the autochthonous grape varieties, Bogdanuša, Pošip and Plavac mali. Their winemaking is characterised by low interference in order to ensure as many varietal, natural flavours and aromas as possible.

When did your family (or you) start making wine?

Our first commercial harvest was in 2017, which we bottled in 2018 when the Pavičić wines reached the consumers for the first time. We started with the grape varieties Plavac mali and Bogdanuša.

How would you describe your winemaking style?

We produce fresh white wines, natural with minimal interference as well as fruity and full-bodied red wines, without filtering.

What does Hvar mean to you?

Hvar is for us the best place in the world. I (Luka) lived four years in Zagreb, but I was just waiting to turn back. I love to live here because I know everybody. It’s such a nice place as it’s green, the sea is clear and there is wine, olives and lavendel. What more can you ask for?

What is the grape variety that you most associate yourself with?

Bogdanuša or Vrbanjka named after the town we live in.

If you could only sell one of your wines, which one would it be and why?

Bogdanuša.

What do you consider to be the best vintages in the past decade?

For us, the best year in the last decade is 2021.

Please tell us the story about the most important vineyards

Our two most important vineyards are Podhum and Studenac. Podhum has great terroir for making first-class wines from Pošip and Plavac Mali.

Studenac on the other hand is perfectly located and has the perfect terroir for making high-quality wines from the grape variety Bogdanuša.

Our dessert wine is made from grapes grown in a vineyard located in a Roman village that is really one of its kind.

Background

The Pavičić family has been winegrowers for generations but has only produced wine for private use until recently, which is a very common practice on the island of Hvar. The brothers have been involved in winemaking from a very early age and in 2019 they decided to launch their first commercial label. Like all the winemakers in our webshop, the majority of the winemaking is done by hand and the brothers produce wines only from the native grape varieties Bogdanuša, Pošip and Plavac mali.

The boutique winery is based in the small village of Vrbanj and the vineyards are located just at the foot of the town in the UNESCO protected Stari Grad Plain. The family owns some of the best vineyards on the island, particularly suited for making wines from Plavac Mali and their signature grape, Bogdanuša.
